Can African Masks bring bad luck?

: I am not a superstitious person but having had an amazingly long spell of very bad luck which seems to follow the purchase of an African Mask (West African?) I am trying to find out if anyone knows whether there are any people who believe that these masks may bring evil spirits?  It is of course more likely that I have just been a repeated random victim of accidents and crime in South Africa...but feeling powerless am grasping at straws!  If I disposed of the mask is there any chance that my fortunes may change?  Any input, especially if you can categorically tell me I am being absurd would be greatly appreciated.
