The best source for both expertise and authentic items that I know for jewelry from this region is Georgia Kan, propriator of Tatiana Gallery in Singapore. She offers an extensive selection of authentic Indonesian tribal jewelry and has supplied pieces for more than 20 years to many important European and American museums and collectors (many of her pieces have been illustrayed in 'classic' books, such as Hersey's 'Indonesian Primitive Art'). She can be contacted at:

Tatiana Gallery

The problem of 'fake' Indonesian tribal jewelry, i.e. modern pieces that that have been produced to deceive collectors, is quite severe. If the right kind of gold (or other metal) has been used, and the style and workmanship is good, it is very difficult to differentiate authentic ethnographic pieces from recently made 'fakes'. I would venture to say, based on what I have observed here in Asia and in Europe and the U.S., that there are many more fakes then authentic ethnographic pieces being sold to unsuspecting collectors, often by dealers who are unable to differentiate between the two. You should do business only with a dealer who has both an established reputation for honesty and recognized expertise in this area.

If you would like to know more, feel free to contact me. I am a Singapore-based business consultant who has been collecting Indonesian tribal sculpture for about 15 years. Good luck. -- Mark Gordon
