The 'Day of The Dead' has its origins in Pre-Columbian religion. It was originally called 'Teotelco' by the Aztecs, and it represents a ritualized homage to ancestors. Every year on this day, families would make offerings to deceased ancestors to honor them, and provide them with sustenance and comfort in the spirit world. The holiday became 'Christianized' and was 'grafted' on to the Church's All-Saints Day with very few changes. Because the recipients of these offerings are dead, the offerings and paraphernalia are shaped around symbols of death -- including the masks. -- Mark Gordon
