I am looking for information on how to date an old earth pot.. Will Carbon testing work on an item made of earth??
I just returned from Johannesburg and while there I visited a friends farm Northwest of Johannesburg towards Botswana. I was hiking around on his farm in a dry river bed that had eroded down about ten-twelve feet so I was actualy in a small canyon. I saw what looked to be a piece of pottery stuck out from exposed acacia roots from the large tree. After digging a while I found a beautiful old earth pot.
Actually more plain looking than beautiful...
I took it to my friend who said that everytime he has found anything like that on his land and said anything about it the South African government has taken it away for studies or for their museums. I decided to pack it up and bring it with me back to the states and research it.
I hand carried it home without any problems and it arrived safely. Before I left I took a GPS reading on the exact area I found it and measured about five feet down in the river bed wall.
My question is again... I would like to no how I could approx. date the pot so I could research the tribe in that exact area and try to find out some history on it.
The local natives on his farm told me they thought is was an old "Beer Pot"..

Thanks for any suggestions..

JAson
